Who we are
The Peace Economy is a youth-led initiative exploring economics, law, governance and public policy through the lens of the systems that shape people’s everyday lives. With Malawi as an important point of reference and the wider Global South as a broader area of interest, TPE aims to make complex ideas accessible and help young people understand how institutions, rules, resources and decisions affect their opportunities.
TPE is developing from a publication into a broader platform for public education, critical inquiry, digital media, civic engagement and, over time, advocacy and policy dialogue. Its work connects ideas and evidence with lived realities, not only to describe problems, but to help audiences understand the structures behind them and ways to engage.
Our Four Pillars
Understand
Build economic, legal, political and governance literacy so young people can better understand the systems that shape their lives.
Think
Encourage critical analysis, evidence-based reasoning, thoughtful debate and the questioning of assumptions.
Act
Create opportunities to turn understanding into informed civic participation, community engagement and practical initiatives.
Influence
Support young people to contribute to public dialogue, advocacy and, as TPE develops, policy engagement and reform efforts.
Our background
Founded by Charnette Nserebo in July 2026, The Peace Economy started as a platform on Substack to explore economics, governance, and policy through the lens of everyday life in Malawi, and the broader Global South.
As the platform developed, it became clear that understanding was only the first step. What society needs now is a generation of young people that are not only informed, but are empowered. TPE is growing to lead that change as a youth-led initiative focused on building political and economic literacy, encouraging critical thinking, and creating pathways that move young people from awareness to meaningful civic action.
Today, along with a team of writers, The Peace Economy brings young people together to understand, think, act, and influence, because it is our belief that meaningful impact begins with understanding the systems we seek to change.
Our Values and Principles
Intellectual integrity
Accuracy, honest sourcing, transparent reasoning and willingness to correct mistakes.
Accessibility
Making complex ideas understandable without oversimplifying them.
Respect and dignity
Treating people and communities as agents, not as props or examples of hardship.
Independence and non-partisanship
Examining policies and institutions without becoming an arm of a political party.
